Herbs make food fun. I think we could all agree. In our last blog post I debunked all things herb related; how we grow and incorporate them at DCE and the impact they have nutritionally and aesthetically in food. As promised, I will be sharing a delicious, easy and universal Herb Garlic Butter Recipe. It incorporates parsley and garlic to create a spread that will be one of the easiest ways to flavour any meat, bread or vegetable. The possibilities are endless.
But first, a little bit of information about Garlic. Garlic is one of the most universal foods used to flavour dishes from many cultures. Because garlic is primarily used as a spice, it makes it hard to classify. FUN FACT: Garlic comes from an edible plant with a bulb, stem, and leaves. Therefore, it’s technically considered a vegetable!
Nutritionally, Garlic is given a pretty solid wrap. One health benefit commonly associated with garlic is its ability to assist in preventing colds. Garlic is full of antioxidants and it is believed that these antioxidant properties may assist in boosting the immune system. However, there is inconclusive evidence to suggest that garlic alone can prevent a cold. A similar story rings true for other associated health benefits. Although most research has been proven inconclusive, the strongest studies to date support it’s potential antibacterial benefits and it’s ability to help control cholesterol-causing lipids in the blood.
None the less, the most important fact is it tastes good and helps bring all the delicious flavours out in food. How can you make sure you are choosing the freshest, most flavoursome garlic in the supermarket? Here is a quick tip. You want to look for bulbs that are white without brown or black spots. The bulbs should also be firm with no soft spots or loose cloves.
I’ll cut to the chase now and share the best bit. Follow the recipe below to create your own Herb Garlic Butter.
